Ikea is very well known for its furniture which has to be assembled by the customer, rather than selling furniture pre-assembled. This reason for this is to reduce the costs and the amount of packaging. The volume of ikea furniture is a lot less when unassembled. Ikea does not always have all its furniture in stock, sometimes a particular type or color has to be shipped from the warhouse to the customers home. Ikea does charge shipping costs for this, which can be quite a lot of money.
The names for ikea furniture are from their own naming system. For example, Materials and Curtains are women's names, and Bathroom articles are Scandinavian lakes, rivers and bays.
Below is a big list about the naming of ikea furniture:
- Upholstered furniture, coffee tables, rattan furniture, bookshelves, media storage, doorknobs: Swedish placenames (for example: Klippan)
